Table Manners: How Massage Table Etiquette Elevates Your Business Success as a Self-Employed Massage Therapist

business Nov 01, 2024

In the world of massage therapy, the phrase "table manners" takes on an entirely new meaning. While referencing dining etiquette, it implies how we behave at the dinner table. In massage therapy, "table manners" refers to the professional conduct, behavior, and etiquette massage therapists practice around their massage table.

In one of the ethics classes I teach called “The Art of Talking,” we discuss how the nuanced rules of professional etiquette at the massage table can significantly enhance the client experience and, ultimately, the business success of solopreneur massage therapists.

As old-fashioned as the word etiquette may sound, understanding these unspoken rules helps you to see the deep connection between professionalism, client satisfaction, and how therapists can distinguish themselves through their verbal approach to client at the massage table.

Understanding and mastering these "table manners" is an essential part of building a thriving business. Whether you're a seasoned therapist or just starting out, implementing these practices can improve client retention, boost referrals, and strengthen your reputation in a competitive market.

Table Manners and Etiquette: Why They Matter

While “table manners” is a fun double entendre when talking about the massage table, the underlying concept is my take on a solution to one of the most frequently expressed frustrations, from the consumer, about service industry individuals.

That frustration is the amount of personal information and talking that a massage therapist will potentially engage in, inside the session.

Having good massage table manners and etiquette extends far beyond technique—it’s about how therapists interact with their clients as they communicate, what they communicate about, how they respond to questions, the tone, and more.

When your clients are on your massage table, they can enjoy the experience and want to reschedule - which is what we are striving towards as business owners. Or they can be made to feel like a captive audience in a negative way where they are simply enduring the hour until they can leave – and not reschedule.

Professionalism Enhances the Client Experience: Just as table manners at a dinner party create a sense of refinement and comfort, massage table etiquette enhances the overall experience for clients. It's not just about performing a great massage—it's about the entire experience from start to finish. Your massage technique can be spot on! But if how you communicate is not well received, that client may not return because they were uncomfortable.

Key Components of Massage Table Manners

So, what exactly constitutes good massage table manners in the massage world? I’m going to list out the key components I feel are important to understand for massage table etiquette, but for this post, we are going to focus mainly on the first and last one.

Amy’s Nine “Unspoken Rules” of Talking Etiquette for the Massage Table

  1. Don’t be negative.
  2. Watch for the humming sign.
  3. One-sided talking.
  4. Stick to the clock.
  5. People just need a safe place to talk.
  6. Learn the art of verbal table tennis.
  7. “Do No Harm”
  8. Your client is NOT your counselor.
  9. Respect yourself and your client.

#1 Don’t Be Negative

Negativity can be contagious, and the massage table should be a haven of relaxation and positivity. As a therapist, it’s important to set a tone that encourages a peaceful atmosphere.

The Importance of Positivity in Client Interactions

  • Starting with a positive mindset can set the tone for the entire session. When you approach each client with enthusiasm and warmth, it invites them to mirror that energy. A simple greeting and a genuine smile can make a significant difference. Remember that clients often come to you seeking relief not only from physical tension but also from the stresses of everyday life. By consciously maintaining a positive attitude, you create a welcoming atmosphere that encourages relaxation and trust.

Techniques to Cultivate Positivity

  • Cultivating a positive environment doesn't have to be challenging. Take a moment to reflect on the value you bring to your client’s well-being and remind yourself of the positive impact your work has on their lives. The more you practice positivity in your professional life, the more naturally it will flow into your client conversations.

The Ripple Effect of Positive Energy

  • The benefits of maintaining a positive demeanor extend beyond individual sessions. When clients feel uplifted and supported, they are more likely to return and recommend your services to others. This creates a ripple effect, fostering a loyal client base and a thriving practice.
  • As a bonus, a positive environment can enhance your own job satisfaction and reduce burnout. When you prioritize positivity, you not only improve the client experience but also contribute to your own well-being as a therapist, leading to a more fulfilling and successful career.

#9 Respect Yourself and Your Client

Respect is a two-way street. As a massage therapist, it’s essential to respect your own boundaries and needs while also honoring those of your clients. This includes maintaining professionalism at all times and ensuring that the client feels comfortable expressing their preferences.

The Foundation of Respectful Communication

  • Respectful communication is a cornerstone of any therapeutic relationship. It involves choosing words carefully and being mindful of the tone and body language used during interactions. For instance, addressing clients with their preferred names and using professional yet friendly language establishes a respectful rapport.
  • This simple act of acknowledgment can make clients feel valued and important, fostering trust and openness. Showing genuine interest in their needs and preferences through active listening conveys respect for the client.

Creating Boundaries Through Language

  • Using clear and respectful language also helps establish boundaries, which are essential for maintaining a professional relationship.
  • It’s crucial to communicate your role as a massage therapist, ensuring clients understand that while you are there to support them, you are not a counselor or therapist in the psychological sense. Use phrasing such as, “I’m here to help you relax and feel your best today,” to establish and make your position clear while respecting their emotional needs.
  • This approach helps the client feel safe to express themselves. I have said many times that clients just want a safe place to talk – be that safe place for them. Be careful not to blur the lines of the professional relationship.

The Long-Term Impact of Mutual Respect

  • When respect is prioritized in communication, it has lasting effects on the therapeutic relationship. Clients who feel respected are more likely to share their concerns, preferences, and feedback, which ultimately enhances their experience. This open dialogue allows for a tailored approach to each session, increasing client satisfaction and loyalty.
  • By modeling respect in your communication, you set the standard for how clients interact with you, fostering an environment where both parties feel heard and valued. In the long run, this commitment to respectful communication not only enriches the client experience but also contributes to the overall health and success of your practice.

Conclusion

I believe that our table manners - how we talk and what we say- is an often-overlooked yet crucial piece in the success of a massage therapist’s business. By focusing on etiquette, professionalism, and client-centered care, self-employed massage therapists can significantly enhance the client experience, build stronger relationships, and ultimately drive business success.
