The 3 Causes of Being “Mentally Stuck” in Your Massage Therapy Business

Jul 16, 2017

Working for yourself, no matter the career choice, can be mentally challenging. You will go through periods of time where you love your career and business; you are excited for the possibilities every day!

Other times you don’t want to get out of bed in the morning and face your “must-do” list. It becomes a HUGE mental chore to just motivate yourself to do things that help you be successful.

Having been a massage therapist for over 30 years, I understand both of those mental places very well. I have had to learn how to keep myself feeling motivate about my career and at the same time, stop the mental exhaustion from occurring.

Some of the reasons you get stuck in this depleting mental state are:
  • No new training – nothing inspires you in your work. You don’t know what you want to do next.
  • You have acquired the “Cookie Cutter Massage Syndrome”. Your massage flow has become a bad version of the movie, Groundhog Day.

  • There is not enough money coming to support you in learning more information. Your schedule isn’t full, you don’t understand why, and you feel unable to change your current situation. (Someone just tell me what to do!)

Believe me when I tell you, there are simple, mental solutions to each of these problems!

To run a successful business, it requires that you always seek out what motivates you.  You have to work at finding NEW things that inspire you all along this business journey. Your mental needs and your business needs change all the time and it is important to continue to seek out inspiration and apply it.

Once you become stagnant, so does your business. For better or worse, a business is a reflection of who you are and what you feel inside.

  • When you are excited and moving forward – so is your business.
  • When you are tired and worn out – your business and massage feel that way.
  • When you need money – you become overwhelmed with worry, stop looking for ways to bring people to your table, and then lack the clientele that pays you.
  • When you are uninspired – so is your touch at the table. Your hands stop selling your business.

Whatever you are feeling – your business becomes an expression of that feeling.

It is really that simple. To change your business, you must first change what you think.

Try looking in your mental mirror (or a real one if it helps you visualize) and decide what you see. Are you excited and love your job? Yes! Why? No…. Why?

Then decide what you want to see and practice seeing it daily. The day you miss doing this is the day you wont see it. (Start this one simple trick today and see what happens. You will be surprised what this day at the office will feel like to you and how people respond to you).

Creating and maintaining the positive habits like the one above are powerful tools that help you be successful and make you feel motivated about your career – without it feeling like a mental chore!
